The real reason was a general culture of overwork that hurt both men and women and locked gender inequality in place.

    背景:哈佛商学院的Robin J. Ely和弗罗里达州立大学的Irene Padavic在研究工作场所中的性别歧视问题时发现,许多受访者,不论男女,都认为企业高层男女比例极度不均衡的原因是因为女性无法平衡事业和家庭。但他们通过长期的调研发现,数据并不支持这种流行的论断。在表示因无法平衡事业和家庭而受感压力的受访者中,高达三分之二为男性,但只有一位男性受访者实际作出了妥协。而几乎所有作出职业妥协(比如减少出差频率)的人(其中大多数为女性)则会被当下的企业文化污名化,同事或上级会下意识认为他们不求上进,工作上靠不住,从而失去晋升机会。这两位研究者的结论是,职场上要达到真正的两性平等,我们需要致力于改革过度工作的企业文化,这样每个员工,不管男女,都能平衡好自己不同的社会角色。
